About Hyde Park Barracks
Hyde Park Barracks opened in 1819 and housed convicts, then from 1848 female immigrants, and later courts and offices; it is part of the Australian Convict Sites on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Its museum uses audio installations and more than 4,000 original artefacts. Open daily 10am–6pm, last entry 4.30pm; closed Good Friday and Christmas Day; no admission charge (Museums of History NSW).
