Canberra, the national capital, is a few hours from Central by NSW TrainLink, which must be booked. Its great institutions include Parliament House, the Australian War Memorial at the head of Anzac Parade, and the National Gallery of Australia.

Parliament House

Parliament House is the seat of the national parliament; we describe the building, not its politics.

The War Memorial

The Australian War Memorial is open daily except Christmas Day, galleries 10am–5pm, with no ticket needed; the Last Post Ceremony is at 4.30pm (awm.gov.au).

Our advice: book the train ahead; regional services fill up.
